Award Winning Students

Duke DPT is proud to announce that Katie Lyn Beasley and Rachel Groff (Class of 2011) have been slated to the APTA’s National Student Assembly Board of Directors and Nominating Committee.  Katie Lyn and Rachel are candidates for the positions of Secretary and Nominating Committee respectively.  Within the APTA, the National Student Assembly serves as the governing body for all PT and PTA students. Numerous Duke students have served on the Assembly in the past, and we hope that Katie Lyn and Rachel will have the opportunity to continue the legacy. Duke DPT wishes both of them the best of luck on this exciting professional endeavor.

 
Duke University Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) Division recruits outstanding students as demonstrated by the number who are recognized by national and division awards.  Duke Physical Therapy (PT) has a proud heritage of students who have received national awards from the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA).  These awards include the prestigious Mary McMillan Scholarship and the Minority Scholarship Award for Academic Excellence.  The Mary McMillan Scholarship, is an award which recognizes superior scholastic ability, service to the American Physical Therapy Association and potential for future professional contribution to the APTA.  In addition, the Minority Scholarship Award for Academic Excellence recognizes students who excel in scholastic achievement, participate in minority affairs activities and services, appropriately display professionalism as a future physical therapist and demonstrate potential for superior achievements in the profession of physical therapy.
 
Complementing national awards, the achievements of Duke DPT students are recognized through awards given by the Duke DPT Division and the Duke PT Alumni Association.   These awards include the Duke Doctor of Physical Therapy Diversity Award, Outstanding Student Recognition Award, Helen Kaiser Scholarships and the Helen Kaiser Alumni Award.

DPT STUDENT MS RIDE AND SUSHI NIGHT

 
 
Six Duke Doctor of Physical Therapy students participated in the National Multiple Sclerosis Society’s Historic New Bern Ride September 12 and 13. As part of the Duke Medicine Team, Jane Griffith, Trevor Matulys, Katherine May, Wren McLaughlin, Anne Rowe, and Misty Woods rode over 1,000 combined miles in two days, alongside the other 2,250 participants. The event raised more than $1.3 million toward a cure for MS.
 
On September 2, the future physical therapists held a sushi dinner fundraiser to involve DPT division students, faculty, and staff in their fundraising efforts. Students prepped enough sushi rolls and sides to feed the 40-plus supporters that showed with wide eyes and eager chopsticks. Their efforts raised over $500 for the New Bern ride. The team wishes to thank everyone for their overwhelming support.
