Duke DPT is proud to announce that Katie Lyn Beasley and Rachel Groff (Class of 2011) have been slated to the APTA’s National Student Assembly Board of Directors and Nominating Committee.  Katie Lyn and Rachel are candidates for the positions of Secretary and Nominating Committee respectively.  Within the APTA, the National Student Assembly serves as the governing body for all PT and PTA students. Numerous Duke students have served on the Assembly in the past, and we hope that Katie Lyn and Rachel will have the opportunity to continue the legacy. Duke DPT wishes both of them the best of luck on this exciting professional endeavor.
 

Congratulations Dr. COOK! - The AAOS Public Relations Oversight Group (PROG) has chosen Dr Cook's review study, The Impact of Glycemic Control and Diabetes Mellitus on Perioperative Outcomes after Total Joint Arthroplastyfor a consumer press release from the July 2009 edition of JBJS. Practice

Pediatric Physical Therapy with particular emphasis on children with neuromusculoskeletal diagnoses including CNS dysfunction (cerebral palsy, traumatic brain injury), motor unit diseases and disorders (muscular dystrophy, spinal muscular atrophy, Pompe disease, and other Glycogen storage diseases), myelodysplasia, other neuromuscular disorders and developmental delay, and systemic disorders, such as juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. Clinical responsibilities including direct physical therapy treatment, casting and orthotic intervention, assistive technology, and coordination with the rest of the medical team regarding patient candidacy for such interventions as serial casting, Botox injections, Baclofen pumps, selective dorsal rhizotomy. Practice includes emphasis on the continuum of care across the lifespan of individuals with diagnoses with onset during childhood. 

Research

Developmental neuroscience, including issues such as plasticity, recovery, and adaptability of the nervous system; developmental biomechanics, dynamic systems and dynamic functioning of the neuromusculoskeletal system, motor control and motor learning, exercise and clinical management of neuromuscular disease and disorders.
