Duke DPT is proud to announce that Katie Lyn Beasley and Rachel Groff (Class of 2011) have been slated to the APTA’s National Student Assembly Board of Directors and Nominating Committee.  Katie Lyn and Rachel are candidates for the positions of Secretary and Nominating Committee respectively.  Within the APTA, the National Student Assembly serves as the governing body for all PT and PTA students. Numerous Duke students have served on the Assembly in the past, and we hope that Katie Lyn and Rachel will have the opportunity to continue the legacy. Duke DPT wishes both of them the best of luck on this exciting professional endeavor.
 

Congratulations Dr. COOK! - The AAOS Public Relations Oversight Group (PROG) has chosen Dr Cook's review study, The Impact of Glycemic Control and Diabetes Mellitus on Perioperative Outcomes after Total Joint Arthroplastyfor a consumer press release from the July 2009 edition of JBJS.   • Dr Cook will be providing an invited educational session to the Irish Society of Chartered Physiotherapists Manual Therapy Special Interest Group in November of 2009, in Dublin, Ireland.
     
  • Dr Cook has been selected as the keynote lecturer for the 2009 American Academy of Orthopedic Manual Physical Therapist (AAOMPT) conference, research day, on October 18th. The topic, "Clinical Decision Making Models" involves a comparison and contrast of current methods of decision making among manually-oriented clinicians.
     
  • 12/11/08 - Dr. Clendaniel received the University of Alabama- Birmingham Distinguished Alumni Award and was the graduation speaker for the Physical Therapy Program.

  • Dr. Covington was elected for a two year term as an NCPTA Delegate to the APTA House of Delegates.
 
  • Dr. White has accepted an offer to become the Director of Education for the Duke Institute for Brain Sciences. His official start date is October 20, 2008.
 
  • Dr. Clendaniel gave an invited 2 day presentation on Vestibular Rehabilitation at the Virginia Physical Therapy Association annual meeting on October 11th and 12th.
 
  • Dr. Clendaniel has been appointed as and Adjunct Assistant Professor, Department of Allied Health Sciences, UNC - Chapel Hill
 
  • Dr. Clendaniel has been asked by Walter Reed Hospital and a group providing civilian PTs to the Army to provide training and certification in Vestibular Rehabilitation.  With the increased incidence of head trauma and associated vestibular disorders as a result of the war, the Army would like their therapists to have these clinical skills and demonstrate a level of knowledge and proficiency in evaluating and treating individuals with these disorders.
 
  • Pam Duncan was interviewed by US News and World Report for an article entitled “How Robots are aiding Stroke Rehabilitation”.
 
  • Congratulations to Dr. Hegedus and Dr. Cook who will be key presenters at this year's APTA Preview 20/20 in Washington DC. Their topics include differential diagnosis and prognosis and involve 15 hours of lecture.
 
  • Dr. Cook's invited editorial titled "Implications for Physical Activity in the Population with Low Back Pain" was just published in the American Journal of Lifestyle Medicine. Within the editorial, Dr Cook called for a common operational definition of "physical activity" to improve the consistency of research within this domain.
 
  • Kudos to Dr Cook who has been invited by West Virginia University's Division of Physical Therapy as the 2009 Keynote speaker for their Visiting Speakers Series. Dr Cook's topic is "manual therapy scholarship" and will include a talk to the faculty and the student body.
 
  • Dr. Purser and her colleague Sally Benedict have been invited to speak at the Fall Chapter meeting of the Greater Richmond Area Alzheimer's Association on the Scientific Basis for and Application of new AHA/ACSM Physical Activity Guidelines to patients with Alzheimer's disease and their caregivers.
 
  • Dr. Pastva was sponsored by the Pepper Center to attend the National Institute of Aging Conference "Asthma in the Elderly - An Exploratory Workshop" to initiate development of research directives in this important area.
 
  • Dr. Taylor has been appointed as a member of the Duke University Graduate Faculty
 
  • Congratulations to Elizabeth Ross on her recent promotion to Assistant Consulting Professor in Community and Family Medicine
 
  • Dr. Shipp was invited by the Women in Government organization to speak on Osteoporosis and Public Health to women state legislators in Pinehurst , NC
